The giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is the tallest extant terrestrial animal, standing to a height of 16-20 ft.

Their range extends from Chad to South Africa, with different populations having different spot patterns.

Though currently recognized as one species with nine subspecies, mitochondrial evidence suggests that giraffes are sequestered into six different, non-interbreeding lineages, with 11 distinct populations within those.
